About my project

My project is related to Okwua Enwezor's The Black box, in this reading it states "representation of nearness as the dominant mode of understanding the present condition of globalism". To me globalism is this "nearness" created by the world wide web as well as the social networking sites within it, this includes facebook. I created a public Facebook event that asked people to post what animal they would save, within these posting I could see just how far my event had stretched globally.  My even stretched from SMCM to Arizona up to Canada, and over to France and Israel, and people of all ages also posted. Then I am placing a real live turtle on the printed out project, he embodies the real being, the real animal, and he will walk around the presented board with chalk duct laid out on the countries connected with, to represent the lines broken by social media. There is also hand written locations of those who posted, to show physically where each post connected to.

final visual project

I am thinking about doing two smaller projects one within a group the other alone relating to two different topics we had to choose from.

Relation aesthetics:
Working with Shannon and Will
using four different types of food or drink and placing them in the four corners of the room, remove labels from these items and relabel them with something that has a bad conotation. Most likely an ingredient within them that is bad for you or is seen as bad. For example putting candy in one corner and placing the label "corn syrup" this word has a bad connotation. This is to see what people decide to eat/drink due to the label but also due to peer pressure. Will more people go to one corner because all their classmates are there? No matter what the substance is? Or will people go on their own and sit back down at their seat and not socialize.
will people follow our lead and only drink/eat what we do, presuming it is safe?

Globalism:

When I think of globalism I think of campaigns for change also social networking and the roots of it. The roots being the material and physical movement of a object around a space, breaking out of its original site. I had the idea to create logos in support of a made up movement for example I would do "Save those who can't save themselves". I would create a logo for this and print it on little pieces of paper or make stickers and give multiples of them to people to hand out and place wherever they would like. I would see the spread throughout campus and maybe even further. Also, creating a jpeg of the logo and posting it on Faceboook asking it to be shared and following it to see how far it stretches over the social network. Then I would document this with photos and screen shots.

visual project 2 reflection

I chose to base my visual project off of Gaston Bachelard and the reading The Poetics of Space, because I wanted to construst an installation for this project in response to his theory of home. In the reading Bachelard talks about our memories and day dreams of home, how we come back to our past lives in our day dreams, that these memories are motionless times fixed in space and "dispersed images". He describes a home as a safe house, that "The house protects the dreamer", and that even the richest of homes you must find the original shell. To respond to this I chose six images from my home, these images of the things I miss while I am away, some are very literal and others more figurative, these are the things I day dream about. I chose to place them on wood because as Bachelard says, homes still have an original shell, wood.

visual two ideas

I want to create an installation inspired by Bachelard's the poetics of space. I want to base my stye, if possible, off an idea from last semester. Billy taught us in my experimental media class how to transfer images onto objects. I want to create an installation of common household objects that have transferred images, of what I feel is home. Photos of things that remind me of home and furthermore what I miss from home when I am at school. (pets, sister, moms artwork, piano, stuffed animal, dock, dirt roads, sunsets, moms food)

I pulled a few ideas and quotes out of the reading that I am thinking about and building off of.
- protection and safe house
- even in the richest places you must find the original shell
- home is not an experience from day to day only
- travel to the land of emotionless childhood.

I believe photography is the best medium because not only is it a clear depiction on reality and what is in front of the camera. In the reading it talks about how memories are motionless. A photo is also a still form of art, yes you can depict motion within a photo but the simplicity of ink on paper, or other ways, is motionlesss.

Great wall

Marina and Ulay we're long time lovers and artists that collaborate together in many performance art pieces. They always tested their inner strengths and used natural elements to do so. They once spent months in the desert together testing their bodies and how still they could be. For this great wall piece they planned it for years, went through the process to get approval to do it and prepared for what they thought they would encounter. It began as a test of love and how lovers would. reunite. Shortly before the piece, they split. This did not halt the artwork though, they still whet through with it and just called it a different name. There are many conceptual ideas and practices within the art piece.

First of all the comparison and creation of theoretical sex neutrality. She started on the legendary male side and him on the female side to create a gender unbiased relation. His side was flatter and in more desert. Her side was in the mountains and started in the pristine tourist area.

She was cooperative and moved smoothly with her guides just like the smooth curves of her side of the wall. He did not cooperate as smoothly he wanted things his way or no way, leading to the no way side. Her path was far more rocky because she chose to walk on the wall, she wanted to take the path build not the one beside it as he did.

Her concept was not to plan but to rather go with the flow. Whatever happened happened, she even tracked backwards once. He has a map and stuck to a plan. He though about what was ahead and she didn't. This goes back to their relationship and how much was invested in the project.

Lastly their reuniting was interesting conceptually in the fact that their reactions were different even though they both walked the great wall, both started with the same idea and in the end both wrote the same poem. She cried when they met again and he commented on her shoes, two very different reactions and turned out to be two very different trips.
